Selecting the right wattage for an LED wall washer is crucial to achieving effective wall illumination. The ideal wattage depends on several key factors, such as the height and size of the wall, the type of lighting effect you want (e.g., general lighting or focused accent lighting), and the preferred color temperature. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you make the best choice:

1- Wall/Facade Dimensions:

Height:  How tall is the wall?  You will need higher wattage or more qty of the led wall washers if the wall is high.

Width: How wide is the wall? You will need a longer or more quantity of LED wall washers if the wall is wide.

Surface Texture: The light is reflected differently by smooth or textured surfaces. (textured walls may require more wattage to achieve even illumination).

2- Lamp Mounting Height:

How far away from the wall the light is mounted affects how the light will spread and the overall brightness needed. Too close or too far mounting may cause the lighting be not as good as it is designed for.

3- Lighting Purpose:

  • Accent Lighting: Focus on highlighting certain features of the wall (e.g., artwork, architectural details).
  • Ambient Lighting: Providing general illumination across the wall for a softer, more uniform effect.
  • Graffiti or Mural Lighting: Higher wattage for highlighting artwork or specific areas of the wall.

4- The Lamp’s Beam Angle:

  • Wall washers come in different beam angles, typically from 10° (spotlight effect) to 60° (flood effect). A wider beam will spread the light over a larger area, while a narrower beam will focus it on a smaller area.
  • If you’re lighting a large surface or want an even wash of light, opt for a wider beam angle.
  • Each LED wall washer mounting distance shall be different based on different beam angle, for example the LED wall washers should be place closer to each other if the beam angle is small, further while the beam angel is wide.

5- The Wall/Facade’s color & finish

  • Light-colored or reflective walls (e.g., white or light gray) will reflect more light and require lower wattage to achieve the desired effect.
  • Dark-colored walls (e.g., black, dark blue, etc.) absorb more light, so you may need more wattage to achieve the same effect.

7- The Lamp Lumen Output:

LED wall washers typically have a high lumen output per watt (e.g., 100-130 lumens per watt). For good wall illumination, aim for a total lumen output that suits the size of the wall. Lower lumen output LED wall washers may light up smaller areas while higher lumen can light up bigger areas.

Estimating Wattage:

Here’s a general guideline for selecting the wattage of an LED wall washer based on wall height:

Lamp Wattage 12W 18W 24W 36W
Wall Height 1 M 1-3M 3-4M 4-5M

Note: This is based on the typical beam angles (30°-60°) and an assumption of even coverage. If you’re using a narrow beam (10°-20°), you may need fewer units or lower wattage, but they’ll need to be placed closer to the wall.
